How-To Guide
How to Install Fiber-Optic Internet
What to expect on installation day — and how to prepare for a smooth setup.
Professional installation (fiber)
Fiber internet always requires a professional technician. Unlike cable, the fiber cable cannot be self-installed — it requires specialized equipment to splice and terminate. AT&T and Frontier include professional installation. Appointment windows are typically 2–4 hours.
Self-install (5G wireless)
T-Mobile Home Internet and AT&T Internet Air are self-installed — the gateway ships to your door and takes 15 minutes to set up. No technician required. If you need internet immediately, this is the fastest path.
Typical Fiber Installation Timeline
Order to appointment
2–14 days
Varies by area and technician availability. Slots in dense urban areas book faster.
Installation appointment
2–4 hours
New construction or first-time fiber at the address takes longer than upgrades.
Service activation
Same day
In most cases, service is live before the technician leaves.
First bill
Prorated
Your first bill includes a partial month from the day of installation.
Before installation day
Clear the area where the gateway will go
The technician will install a small optical network terminal (ONT) — usually near an exterior wall or utility room. Clear at least 3 feet of space around the planned location.
Decide on your gateway placement
Your Wi-Fi gateway should go near the center of your home for best coverage. Let the technician know your preferred location before they run the fiber drop.
Be present or have someone available
Fiber installation requires someone over 18 to be home for the full appointment window. The technician needs access to the exterior of your home and at least one interior room.
Note any existing holes or conduit
If fiber was previously run to your address (by a prior tenant or provider), the technician can often use existing conduit — which can shorten the installation significantly.
What the technician does
Runs fiber from the street or utility pole to your home
For most residential installations, fiber is run aerially (along existing utility poles) or underground to the side of your home. This is the longest part of the job — typically 1–2 hours for a new installation.
Installs the ONT on the exterior or in a utility area
The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) converts the fiber-optic signal into an Ethernet signal your gateway can use. It is about the size of a paperback book and mounts to your wall.
Connects the ONT to your gateway inside
A short Ethernet cable runs from the ONT to the gateway (the Wi-Fi router the provider supplies). The technician will place the gateway in your requested location.
Tests the connection and your Wi-Fi
The technician runs a speed test and confirms your service is activated before leaving. This is your opportunity to ask questions about the gateway, Wi-Fi passwords, and the account app.
After installation
Set up the provider app
AT&T offers the Smart Home Manager app; Frontier offers the Frontier app. Both let you manage connected devices, run speed tests, set parental controls, and diagnose issues without calling support.
Enable AutoPay to lock in your advertised price
All fiber plans we carry require AutoPay with a bank account or debit card to receive the advertised price. Set this up within your first billing cycle.
Test your speeds on a wired device first
Plug a laptop directly into the gateway via Ethernet and run a speed test. This confirms the fiber connection itself is performing correctly before you troubleshoot Wi-Fi.
Optimize gateway placement for Wi-Fi coverage
If you notice dead zones, move the gateway closer to the center of your home or consider adding a mesh Wi-Fi extender. Call the provider if speeds are significantly below your plan tier.
